Independence Day
Every year the Philippines get to enjoy an annual national holiday called Independence Day. It was on June 12, 1898 that General Emilio Aguinaldo declared that the Philippines was independent from Spanish rule. On this day, we remember the countless sacrifices made; we appreciate our country’s sovereignty; and we continue to celebrate our culture and tradition that has been passed down to us.
Independence Day this year falls on a Monday. So as it is a national holiday, business, schools, and offices are closed and families get to spend the day together doing things that they are not usually able to do during weekdays, going to malls to celebrate and eat out, seeing Independence Day parades, going to museums, and doing other celebratory activities.
INDEPENDENCE DAY FACTS:
- There are actually TWO Independence Days for Filipinos
What we celebrate on June 12 is the independence from Spanish rule. The other independence day is the independence from American rule, July 4, which is the same day for American Independence Day. But for us Filipinos, we consider June 12 to be our true independence day.
- The national flag design has not changed over the years
Our current Philippine flag still has the same design as that which was unfurled in 1898. The Philippine national flag has a rectangular design that consists of an white equilateral triangle which symbolises liberty, equality, and fraternity; a horizontal blue stripe which symbolises peace, truth, and justice; and a red stripe for patriotism and valor. The three stars represent the three major islands: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao; while the eight sun rays represent the eight provinces that were to be believed where the original anti-Spanish revolt broke out.
FUN ACTIVITIES TO TRY:
- Try something new to eat
In BGC, there are a lot of Filipino restaurants, which are near residential condominium buildings, that offer a variety of Filipino dishes. Most of the time, these are just walking distance and are very accessible. But might I suggest a fun activity for you and your family? Why not try something very Filipino that you haven’t tried yet? One suggestion is having “balut” or “penoy.”
- Try dressing up in Filipino traditional clothes
There are a lot of traditional clothes in the Philippines, not just Barong for men and Baro’t Saya for women. There are modern Filipino attires available, not just the traditional clothes. If you want to try something fun and new, this is definitely something you must try.
